RUFUS remixes Citizens' 'Caroline'. It's of course an accident that the two acts (and the song being remix) lends itself so well to alliterative effect, but, sonic wise, the easy rhythm is no coincidence. RUFUS remix of 'Caroline' is wonderfully weird, and lovingly executed weird. It's weird with a purpose. The prime backbeat has the electric sound effect you'd expect a bouncing Brickles ball stuck in the corners of an 80's computer to have, and the hook is a plea to, please, stop making sense.

Citizens - Caroline (RUFUS Remix)
RUFUS remixes Citizens' 'Caroline'. It's of course an accident that the two acts (and the song being remix) lends itself so well to alliterative effect, but, sonic wise, the easy rhythm is no coincidence. RUFUS remix of 'Caroline' is wonderfully weird, and lovingly executed weird. It's weird with a purpose. The prime backbeat has the electric sound effect you'd expect a bouncing Brickles ball stuck in the corners of an 80's computer to have, and the hook is a plea to, please, stop making sense.
Diamond Eyes - Beverly Hills - SIMØNE Voice Remix
SIMØNE gives us a voice remix of Diamond Eyes' 'Beverly Hills'. The result is a synth-wave piece of gold. Choral effects are often used in tracks--to scare, to comfort--but SIMØNE's 'Beverly Hills' has one of the best all-around interpolations of vocals we've heard. The vocals hear switch between the Ian Curtis- like lamenting of the dominant vocalist, to the carefully chosen choir breakouts. This is the cool eeeliness you get when you travel down the esophagus.
Le Youth - Memories
Le Youth releases 'Memories'. 'Memories' is a confident summer dance record. It's at once at home at in a sweltering cabana-inspired nightclubs and it's as cool as an indoor ski resort. This duplicity is largely achieved by the excellent pairing of vocal and beat, or the harmonious incongruity. The vocalists crystalline, cold vocals slide right over the tropically inspired beat with ease. Thanks for the memories.

Moon Boots (feat. Violetness) - Running From
Moon Boots releases "Running From", a sunny, spacious synth-pop gem. What the running from is from is unknown, but the form of the running from is excellent. Upright, elegant, and fast. The track is #1 on the Kistune Soleil mix. Pre-order the Kitsune Soleil set here.
Virgin Magnetic Material - The Number 20 Mix Tape
We've got another cut from Virgin Magnetic Material. This time it's an extended series of cuts, a mix tape: Mix Tape # 20. The mix tape mainly focuses on supreme cuts in the Nu Disco genre. If you need a little hint as to how funky and freak it gets, the opening cut is a nu disco remix of king of the disco terrestrials, David Bowie, and his classic track "Space Oddity". It gets odder from there. The mix tape is available for a free download until the end of the week at the thenumber20.com.
Billy Idol - White Wedding (Virgin Magnetic Remix)
If you've got the gall to re-imagine Billy Idol's "White Wedding", you better back the boldness up with sonic quality---and Virgin Magnetic Material does just that. This remix finds "White Wedding" being slowed down, but the intensity is still there. Stronger percussion, more seductive grooves and pockets. It's said that you mellow with age, and this intricate, intimate remix is perfect for that dictum. Even Billy Idol must grow old, but that doesn't mean the cool can't still burn.

Zimmer -Tobogan (June Tape)
Zimmer releases a tape to round up a blue June. The tape features the likes of Cassian, Chordashian, Plastic Plates, The Faint---to name but a few. We've even got a Rick Astley remix in there. You're more than covered in tropical, disco, and house. Don't say you went into the eye of July unprepared.
The Presets - Youth in Trouble (Official Video)
The Presets release an official video for their single "Youth in Trouble". The video is a tehnicolor trip. Against the engine fuel electronics, the visual style of the video looks at once inspired by the mania of Ryan Trecartin and the sweetness of Paul Klee. Maybe the kids are all right, after all. The Presets new album 'Pacifica' is out September 14th on Modular.
Dead Can Dance - Anastasis and Amnesia
Dead Can Dance return with the appropriately titled "Anastasis" album (out August), their first release since 1996. 'Anastasis" is Greek for resurrection, and lead single 'Amnesia' proves DCD has returned. The track is an updated, splendid mix of the new classical, folk, and gothic that DCD are so known for. Check it out below. Don't be late in jumping into the river Lethe.

Isaac Tichauer - Doing What I Got
"Here comes Isaac Tichauer to teach you: nobody's going to do it better than us", reads the page promoting the latest track, "Doing What I Got". In terms of tropic electro (tropolectro, if you will), few people actually do it better than Isaac Tichauer. "Doing What I Got" is a prime example. Isaac Tichauer is a master of interpolating vocals (in this case, vocals from "Sitting On Top of the World") in a genre that often shuns vocals altogether or buries them under the tropics. The track is a perfect soundtrack for the blurred, shot through with bright colors end of June days that lead us into the 4th. Of all the statements, perhaps the last one is the most tantalizing: "Isaac has prepared a massive debut which we will debut this July".
Danny Brown - Die Like A Rockstar (Brodinski Remix)
'Techno Trap' is what Brodinski's furious remix of Detroit rapper Danny Brown's "Die Like A Rockstar". Danny Brown is far from a trap rapper, but when you consider the theme of "Die Like A Rockstar", it makes sense. The song is all about similarities to famous people trapped to drugs, and their rapid downfalls. Brodinski, of course, brings the techno part. Danny Brown's elastic voice, the voice with the the panic and of a man with cardiomyopathy jumping on a trampoline-is preserved and set over a beat far more fast paced than the original. Perhaps the coolest part is the subtle ambulance effects laced throughout the track, as if it is only a matter of time before it catches up to the beat (and, by effect, Brown). Gesundheit.
Taragana Pyjarama - All Those Weird Things
In case you weren't expecting the artist known as Taragana Pyjarama to put out an exhilaratingly left-of-center track, the artist is here to alert you. "All Those Weird Things" is from Taragana Pyjarama's Tipped Bowls LP. It's easy to see why the cut is worthy of the esteemed Kompakt label it was released on: It's challenging, and slyly quicksilver in the all the right places. The high point is around 2:17 in, when a flurry of what sounds like a mix of bubbles and the sound ones foot makes when stepping in hard snow combine with a circling electronic effect to create one of the most minimally ecstatic music we've heard in a while. 'Fairy tale with a baseline', indeed.
Jensen Sportag - Gentle Man
Jensen Sportag lets us in on "Gentle Man". The one word that keeps coming up when we check out what everyone is saying about this is: soul. The track is almost a refreshingly straightforward soul. It's not the disaffected, borderline chopped-and-screwed sound that rules most of electro-soul records. Falsetto and light, softly layered drums are the model here."Gentle Man" is boldly vulnerable.

Future Feelings - Drive SIMØNE Remix
Whoo! SIMØNE remixes Future Feelings' "Drive", and the excellent track comes complete with 100 free downloads."Drive" is decidedly more "Cruisin' USA" than "Need For Speed". Meaning, it's lighter, more fun, and brighter. Wrapped in layers of synth-funk, the "Drive" remix is fit for a futurist Ferarri or a diamond in the back Cadillac.
Sebastien Tellier - Russian Attractions (Official Video)
Sebastien Tellier releases an official video for "Russian Attractions". There is little doubt this video is official, because it has the sheen and bombast that only comes with major label (and cash) direction. In the comments for the video, two names were brought up: James Bond, and the Great Gatsby. They're fitting comparisons. The video follows a set of swimmers, synchronized and alone, but always in some kind of hypnotic rhythm. The underwater shots are particularly gorgeous--shot through with purple and blue, not totally mermaid, and not quite human.

Com Truise - Open
Com Truise releases 'Open', a techno, technicolor slow burner. 'Open' is punctuated by what sound like elastic drums and even more elastic synths. Midway through, a voice that sounds like the seductress that HAL 9000 never had breaks through for testing. Testing for what, we don't know, but we like the sound of it. After that, things get weird.
The Bloody Beetroots - Rocksteady
Today is the day of The Bloody Beetroots release of the newest single, "Rocksteady". The single is the follow up to massive hit "Church of Noise", and "Rocksteady" finds The Bloody Beetroots forsaking the church for the garage. "Rocksteady" is ten-fingered, full fisted garage electro, and you won't have to wait long for what promises to be an equally exhilarating music video. The video, directed by Wyatt Newman, is set to be released June 28th. Here's one choice quote about the shoot: "Girls, Shotguns, 70's muscle cars, Dust....Nice!" Not enough Bloody Beetroots news for you? We've got more. Bloody Beetroots is currently on tour, and will be making a highly anticipated appearance at Electric Zoo.
The Presets - Pacifica Deluxe Edition
The Presets announce a very speak deluxe edition of their album Pacifica. Only 1,500 copies will be available worldwide. Your deluxe edition comes with a lenticular cover and a 12" case---and three audio formats: CD, Vinyl, and MP3. And you've haven't even looked inside yet. Inside you'll find extensive artwork and a limited edition lithograph, which is numbers and signed by the band. Pre-order here.

The Magician - Magic Tape Twenty Four
Check out the 24th in The Magician's Magic Tape series. And be sure to check this out. We've got good news and bad news: First, let's get the bad news out of the way. There will be no Magic Tape in July and August. All the more reason to embrace the good news: Magic Tape 24 is killer, and a long-burning one at that. It's all the energy and electricity you'd expect from a man who'll be taking the summer off and knows, if he can't make the party, he'll provide the soundtrack to the endless summer.
Justice - New Lands (Falcon Remix)
Justice gets the remix spin from Falcon. The cut in question is "New Lands", and Falcon's remix is particularly focused on discovery. Sonics fade in-and-out, light to the touch. This is a light electronic record that is periphery in the best way. It's never overwhelming, and it's always there when you need it.
Weekend Wolves - Home
Weekend Wolves release "Home", and it's not fit for the Weekend Wars. The song is an out-and-out thraser from the start. Bolstered by a warped and masticated synth wave spit from the mouth of a crimson robot, "Home" is a dark-snyth staple. Move over weird, memorable screams in 'Prometheus': We've got a new otherworld sound to recall, and it's far scarier (and makes far more sense).

Governors Ball 2012 RECAP
Governors Ball: two stages, no overlapping sets, electronic music, and rock music. This time around, Gov. Ball moved from Governor’s Island to Randall's, not affecting attendance much but unfortunately added more of a commute to the festival’s official afterparties at the Brooklyn Bowl. The festival itself was well-behaved, with some engaging in croquet, some enjoying the food trucks on the hills, some tossing Frisbee. All in all great music in the air. Nothing to complain about. A solid good time.
Big Gigantic, the Denver, CO duo, proved to be one of the biggest surprises of Governors Ball. Producer Dominic Lalli’s saxophone riffs and drummer Jeremy Salken’s big beats ignited the air with drum ‘n bass, glitch, house, and jazz. Yes jazz! The brightly lit Honda Stage– and its amazing sound system– made listening to Big Gigantic a more visceral and physical experience with the kick drum existing in the sternum while the tenor jazz riffs tickling the ears. These guys were clearly going all out and wanted to make sure the audience knew it.
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Pat Mahoney decided to name their crate-digging DJ duo, Special Disco Version, as such when they started playing live shows around New York City a few years ago. Murphy and Mahoney’s was that of a ‘70s disco block party. “We’re going to turn this into a big block party. Can we turn it up out there?” Murphy asked in his signature deadpan. The crowd went wild. Not one body remained still.
Chromeo, always a good time. With their their high-heeled keyboard stands and Kraftwerk-esque backup dancers, the Canadian electrofunk put on a great performance. “Chrom-EE-oh!” everyone chanted there wasn’t much time for intellectual discussion. P-Thugg and his companion Dave 1 struck a balance between Auto-Tuned hamming onstage and pitch-perfect renditions of “Tenderoni”, “Bonafied Lovin’”, “Hot Mess”, “Fancy Footwork”, and other songs that will someday appear on Chromeo’s Greatest Hits. The duo will be retreating to the studio to finish up their long-awaited next LP.
Kid Cudi may be a prima donna, live up to his juvenile moniker, and forget the words to his songs, but somehow he still manages to put on a great show. He gave the audience exactly what they wanted. Shouting out to the “Cudder fans” out there, he introduced WZRD beatmaker Dot Da Genius and launched into “Mojo So Dope”, “Scott Mescudi Vs. the World”, and “one of my favorites” “Solo Dolo” off Man on the Moon. “Cud Life” tourmate and fellow Clevelander Chip Tha Ripper also made an appearance for “All Talk”, lending Cudi some street cred before he fumbled “Cudi Zone” and had to start over. Despite all that, which for anyone else would probably be a dealbreaker (and for many people in the audience who left early, it certainly was), Dot Da Genius’ beats and Cudi’s sheer enthusiasm — not to mention David Guetta-produced closer “Memories” — made it worthwhile to stick around. Even if Cudi did get cut off promptly at 11, unceremoniously halted before a rumored rendition of “Pursuit of Happiness”.

Purity Ring - Fineshrine
Purity Ring release an excellent cut off their upcoming highly anticipated album. "Shrines" is out in Canada July 24th, 2012. Their latest track "Fineshrine"is one of the warmest cuts. The singer gently asks you to 'get a little closer', and the instrumental is a 3:30 marvel of inviting, just the right temperature electronica. It's a shrine to being fine--wanting and wanted at once.
Sneaky Sound System - Friends (Plastic Plates Remix)
Plastic Plates tweak around with Sneaky Sound System's "Friends". With hope, this remix will replace the song that most people have in their heads when they think "why can't we be friends?" This remix is more funky, has more bite. You'll actually want to be friends with the person who sings this, because they have such an effortless way of gliding over a near impossible instrumental. This super retro recored is the 'too-cool for me; friend, the one you never really get too close to, but still a friend you admire from afar.
Reptile Youth - Black Swan Born White (Keep Shelly in Athens remix)
Scotch & Murder favorite Keep Shelly in Athens remixes Reptile Youth's "Black Swan Born White". The title seems to indicate that their is a sinister presence lurking---that innocence is only the careful hiding of guilt: black swan turned white. There are few acts more adept at channeling this grey area between the crystalline and the gothic, Eden and error than Keep Shelly in Athens. On "Black Swan Born White" she gives us a dreamscape fuzz as a dominant instrumental, while at times holding one lone, near nightmarish chord out, bringing it to the forefront, and stretching it to its very limit. It is a question of what limit you want to test.

Breakbot - 1 Out Of 2 (feat. Irfane) (Oliver Remix)
Oliver remixes Breakbot's track "1 Out Of 2". The remix is bolstered by a 1200 BPM squared instrumental, complete with an infectious clicking effect that sounds like maracas and finger snaps had a baby. This is not the full cut, so stay tuned for the whole thing shortly. We trust this'll tide you over in the meantime. Call "1 Out Of 2" 2 for 2 so far.
Twin Shadows - Five Seconds (Official Music Video)
Check out the first video from Twin Shadow's "Confess" album. The video for "Five Seconds" has something far too many videos lack in 2012: A narrative. Two men ride out, encounter danger, deal with the danger to varying degrees of success and failure, ride off, and punch each other. If there was ever a music video that crossed "The Warriors" and an immensely enjoyable road-lone-ranger b-movie, it's this music video. It all takes places under the night of the silver sun, as it only could. "Confess"is out July 9th in the UK and July 10th in the U.S.
Zambri - All You Maybes (Official Music Video)
Check out Zambri's official music video for "All You Maybes". The track is a fury of synth that proves sometimes all you need for a chorus is a good rocking out. Whereas the rock out was once reserved only for guitar players in gargantuan hair bands (quite possibly the furthest thing from Zambri) , Zambri unleashes a 21st century automated-love synth chorus that rivals almost anything of the original thrash chorus. It follows that the video itself plays with traditional expectations of automation and retro: An early prototype digitized robot (vividly realized by Johnny Woods) has a complicated relationship with a computer: his very own creator.
Moonlight Matters - Come For Me Final
Moonlight Matters has released his Come For Me EP, and it's worth a listen or eleven. The three song EP is a veritable mash of three distinct records, with all the fullness and depth of a proper full length. 'Come For Me' is a fast-paced dance hall/reggae record that moves along effortlessly. 'Standing Up For Love' is a mock post-punk/electronic romance ballad. And 'Rain Dance' is a house record of horrors and hummingbird fun. The EP also features Gustaph from Hercules and Love Affair. It's hard to name a quality that the Come for Me EP doesn't feature or flaunt.
Jan Driver - Peaker
Jan Driver releases "Peaker". The track is a sputtering phoenix of a joint: Heavy on the reverb, twists and turns, and sonic rebirth. And one of the weirdest vocal samples we've heard in a while. Also included is Action Flowers' rework of "Peaker"---a mix a bit more electrofied and synth surfing. Two peaks on one trip.

Lancelot - KnighTime Mix Vol. 1
Lancelot releases a tape that will put you to sleep, or keep you up all night. "KnighTime Mix. Vol. 1" is a near perfect mix of after burners, those songs that linger in the back of the mind--even around 4 A.M, or perhaps most powerfully around 4 Am.M. This is a mix for insomniacs and sleep apneaics alike. If The Avalanches recently released "Sleepy Bedtime Mix" was a masterful groove of chill surf and wave sounds, Lancelot's "KnighTime" mix is its more sedate, drive-up-to-the-top-of-the-mountain-and-stare-longingly-down-at-city-lights kind of mix. A longing and relaxed mix for the urbane, when the sheer inundation of daily jittering sounds leaves you waking up from the noise of no horns beeping, and no one to bother you.
Tracklisting:
1. Perseus - Running Back To You
2. Poolside - Do You Believe?

Lifelike - Mixtape June 2012
Lifelike releases his June mixtape. It's a tape for the month that, in the minds of most, kicks off summer on the 1st. And for the others, the rational ones who don't make Monday and Tuesday their weekend, the summer officially begins on the 21st. In any event, June means one thing: Summer has started. Lifelike includes plenty of cuts worthy of the month---plenty of cuts fit for a squelching 3pm barbecue and plenty of cuts for cool 8 P.M blood orange sunsets (This thursday is the longest day of the year, watch out). The mix tape includes cuts from Sebastian Tellier, Popular Computer, and Kiki Twins, to name but a few.

Thieves Like Us - Maria Marie (Official Video)
Thieves Like Us release an official video for "Maria Marie". The video looks like a compendium of 80's German Cinema side reels, and the plot follows a wayward teenager named Maria. The deliciously transformed cheap synths and lilting vocals give off the impression of chic desperation, and in the video, it seems that, though Maria may continue to be wayward, she'll somehow always find her footing. How do you solve a problem like Maria? You can't. Not even Maria can.
Lifelike & Popular Computer - Getting High (Alcala Remix)
Alcala twists up Lifelike & Popular Computer's prime cut, "Getting High". The drug-induced track leans more toward dark, spaced-out vibes than jokey ones. There's little room for contemplating the ceiling or marveling at your fingers here. It's all business in hitting the high, from the manic instrumentation to the garbled and ribbed vocals. Enjoy.
Party By Jake - Poolside/Slow Down
Party By Jake release the delightfully cracking "Poolside/Slow Down". The track is appropriately whirlpoolish, if you will. It's swirling in vortexes of wavy bass and glossed electronics. It's officially summer in three days. Slow down and take it in.
Peter & The Magician - Memory
Peter (Yuksek) and The Magician release "Memory". The track has one of the loveliest and relaxing instrumental we've heard all summer. "Memory" is built around that same sample of tropic music (you'll know it when you hear it) that seems to run from video games to elevators. However, Yuksek and the Magician make it into something fresh, largely through the power of the bass and the grace of the light vocals on the hook. You know that tropic sample when you hear it, but hopefully you'll remember it as something else now.
Die Antwoord - I Fink You Freeky (CRNKN Remix)
CRNKN releases a remix of Die Antwoord "I Fink You Freeky". The remix rivals the original in its elastic weirdness. In CRNKN's mix, we get a bending electronic breakdown, whereas in the original we are just pushed to the edge, but never given the come down. The breakdown is as fleeting as the dance-hall breakneck hook, and neither give you a central footing. You're on your own in this one, and that's just where Die Antwoord want you.

Hot Chip - Don't Deny Your Heart
Hot Chip releases the exuberant "Don't Deny Your Heart". The track is from their just released record In Our Heads. "Don't Deny Your Heart" comes with a flashbulb-popping energy: supremely bright synths and spins. And, it has a grunting sound effect that would make Rick Ross and Biggie jealous. If you care to experience "Don't Deny Your Heart" (and really, you should experience it), Hot Chip is currently on tour. They'll be coming to the Prospect Park Bandshell on July 18th, so get ready.
Justice - New Lands (A-Trak Remix)
Two contemporary titans in the electronic scene meet. A-Trak remixes Justice's "New Lands", and the result is worthy of the undertaking. It's common to refer to a hot song as a 'banger', and rarely has the term seemed so appropriate for a song as in "New Lands". The instrumental is bursting at all sides with deep drums and 8 layer caked synths, to name only afew parts in the cacophony. Discretion not advised.
CFCF - Exercise #3 (Official Video)
CFCF releases an official video treatment for "Exercise 3". The video is shot in sharp, meditative black and white---it's a nice complement to the electronic austerity of the track that makes the video. Only a couple of things get a color infusion---buds, mainly. Rose buds, the buds of the gorgeous woman's eyeballs. This is a video made for noticing the little things, and the entire world in each and every one of them.

Van She - Jamaica
Van She release the second single from their upcoming album Idea of Happiness (July 6th). "Jamaica" is appropriately Caribbean catchy and inspired. We can imagine that this is the kind of song that awakens Bernie from his weekend. Blown out and blissed out, but still keeping a two step. You can pre-order the album here.
Age of Consent - Heartbreak (Wilbur. DUB remix)
Check out the first remix from Wilbur (formerly known as Greedy from electro group Static and Greedy). After the successes of Static and Greedy, Wilbur is setting out on his own. And his remix of Age of Consent's "Heartbreak" is quite a start. It's a sure-fire bet in the left of center lane of house/disco music. Be sure to check out Wilbur's mix tape on his Soundcloud page.
Holy Other Announces Tour and Debut LP
Expect to be seeing a lot of the Holy Other in the near future. A master at combining R&B, UK garage, and house Holy Other is coming off the success of his debut EP With U and is set to release his debut album, Held(8/28, Tri Angle records). With U was about the breakdown of a relationship, while Held is about the lulls and lifts in a relationship, the moments when one wishes to be held and the moments when one must hold. Check out Holy Other's "Love Some1" track below to get a sense of how firm the artists hold is.
Holy Other also announces a series of summer tour dates. The tour will take Holy Other all over Europe, and on September 1st the artist will be making a very special stop at New York's PS1. A little known group called Atoms For Peace will be playing, too.
