Digitalism remixes WhoMadeWho's ‘Inside World’(an appropriate phrase for what a remix is if there ever was one). This song sounds like David Byrne’s voice on E., less Talking Heads and more Seeing Sounds. The voice sings about the love to simply walk around to a beat, and the songs builds into a uphill crescendo at around the 3 minute mark. (Check out the SoundCloud visuals to see the massive changes in tone). We also leave you the debut music video for the original version of Inside World.

The New Division - Opium (Doleips remix)
From Doleips comes a stand-out in synth pop, his remix of The New Division's Opium. Tracking by a high falsetto that manages to sound both relaxed and entirely present. The ‘ cure for a bad day’ surely refers to the fluffy and white, but you can add another palliative to the mix: This track. Secrets that I never should have known/are running through my veins into my soul.
We Have Band - Where Are Your People? (Video)
We’ve featured the sounds of We Have Band before, and here is the video for single ‘Where Are Your People’ off of their new album Ternion. The set design is reminiscent of 70’s family sitcoms like The Brady Bunch, and the execution gives off the same uncomfortably serene vibe. The members of We Have Band channel their spirit into effigies that definitely have lied in the uncanny valley once or twice. It is a nice sprite of revulsion, one that motivates you to find the real live person closest to you and hold on.
Goldroom - Angeles
There are no shortage of tributes to the sprawling lands of California, but Goldroom’s ‘Angeles’ feels right at home. ‘Dreamwave’ could not be a more fitting sonic match to the City of Dreams. It’s a tribute to the nights when you’re set right in the middle of LA, content to let its endless amount of contradictions and worlds wash over you. Angeles/they wanna know, they wanna know about it.
Plastic Plates - Toys + January MixTape
Plastic Plates' ‘Toys’ stars out with jumpy synths that wouldn’t sound out of place at a Tahitian rave, then breaks down into slick electro befitting of speeding down an Akira inspired highway. Plastic Plates maintain a firm balance of aesthetic throughout the track; a track so well prepared that it seems as flexible and light as their namesake.
Mr. Plates was also kind enough to drop some love in the form of his January Mixtape. Both are here for your listening pleasure, as well as free for you downloading pleasure. Long live Plastic Plates.

Justice drops in with their latest video for ON'N'ON. Director Alexandre Courtes out does himself on the inter-galactic mind bender of a video. ON'N'ON gets its own EP (Out January 30th) with remixes by Brodinski, Erol Alkan, Rick Rubin, Tiga, and Video Village. Simply Stunning.
Cascine x Work Drugs - The Ice Wharf Remixes
Cascine and Work Drugs collaborate for two particularly stellar remixes of Work Drugs’ “Ice Wharf”. The first, remixed by Selebrities, is a sunny, synth heavy track. It gives off a vibe of invincibility, stomping on very delicate, soon to be melting ice. And, the second remix, remixed by Southern Shores, is its worthy counterpart: icy electronics over medium drums. It feels as if it aims to capture the suspended moment when the ice finally breaks, but you have not yet fallen in the water.
As per our friends at THE FADER - "Cascine, the little label with some of 2011's most charming sounds, has entered the new year, hoisting two of their most distinctive artists, Southern Shores and Selebrities, across the calendar gap into this weird, uncertain future. The two groups linked with Philadelphia's Work Drugs out of mutual admiration and friendship, crafting totally them remixes of Work Drugs' 'Ice Wharf', a song lovingly dedicated to near-blackouts in Camden." - THE FADER
Both tracks are available for free right off the player.
Miike Snow - Paddling Out
Miike Snow offers up a new cut, ‘Paddling Out’. If you thought no one could make a catchy and song using ‘paddling’ as the main focal point (we count ourselves among you), here is the song that proves you wrong. Miike Snow’s next album, ‘Happy To You’ is due out in March. There is someone here who laughs too hard at everything/You say isn’t it hard/paddling out, paddling out.

We Have Band - Ternion (Album)
We Have Band's sophomore release Ternion (out on Naïve; January 31st digital release, February physical release) takes its name from a noun for ‘three; triad’. Eager to move past their widely embraced chopped-and-split sound/nonsensical lyrics on the first album, WHB have gone forth in a decidedly more personal, dynamic direction: ‘After All’ has them tackling heady moral quandaries (We took this hook/to soothe the fevers/by hook by crook/become believers), lost love (And now we’re both turned upside down/empty hearts turned inside out/Pick a story its yours to tell/And on your knees you tell it very well), reluctant responsibility (Marching through the streets/we heard them drum for 40 days and 40 nights/it’s all they hummed/their colors jumped up in the flames/jump in the fire/empty words and clever games of which we tire/needing someone to blame for this position/needing someone to blame/but who will listen), and far more.
And, no doubt, the virtuoso sonic moments are still here, more matured and vibrant: Doo-Wop Organs in ‘Visionary’, what sounds like an old AOL dial-up in the opening of ‘Watertight’, a taut strumming breakdown in the end of ‘Pressure On’. At times this record recalls the best of Silver Apples, a band equally as exhilarating and hard to classify. Ternion is an album that resists a ‘scene’. It sounds as if it could have been recorded out-of-time, both in its minute improvisations and its resistance to ephemeral music trends. We Have Band took to heart a fundamental paradox: By digging deep into ones own neuroses and inner lives, a timeless thing can emerge that relates to all.
We Have Band is not simply content to let Ternion stand on its own, though it is proven to be exceedingly capable: They will also be releasing a deluxe edition featuring a deconstruction of the record titled, Ternion Aside. It is a remixing of their own record, an ever-evolving, organic process.
At the end of Ternion, We Have Band asks “Where Are Your People?”. In the case of those who should hear Ternion: They are here, there, and everywhere. A perfect triangle.
We Have Band - Watertight
We Have Band - Where Are Your People
We Have Band - Visionary
Light Asylum – Skull Fuct (Video)
Light Asylum’s ‘Skull Fuct’ video is indeed a head-spin, a fucked-upped situation normal all fucked up beyond all recognition so fucked up its ‘Fuct’(emphasis on elongating the t if especially fucked up) .The darkwave duo Light Asylum are backed here by gothic and flash-force visuals: horses, strange men with white eyes walking the woods, spiders, a very, very large knife. But perhaps most startling is the presence of the band members, only their faces lit by shadows. They are a charismatic, complicated presence against the striking visuals, and a reminder that the best skull-fucking art fucks up your brain, but never lets you off that easy. Depths lie underneath.
Official Warning: "This film contains flashing lights which may not be suitable for photosensitive epilepsy."
Moguai - Mpire
A snippet of the lead single to Moguai’s heavily anticipated Mpire EP (Mau5trap). This Progressive House track treats you, in only six minutes, to two worthy breakdowns that have the force of a hour long windup. The joys of a full album will have to wait until the 30th, but, for now, ‘Mpire’ should tide you over in good spirits. Pick up Moguai's Mpire directly from beatport.
Bag Raiders - Monthly Mixtape (January Edition)
This is the first in a series of mixes offered up by Bag Raiders (fitting for the kind of glorious ransacking and interpolation of tracks these guys do). The mix begins with a spin on classical composer Nils Frahms’ “More”, followed by a seamless shift into Miguel Campbell’s “Baby I Got It”. Baby I got it you want it/come on and get it. We were convinced to take up the challenge and dive into the rest of these splendid House/Deep House tracks, and bet you will be too.

The M Machine - Glow (Video)
Machines can be human, too. So suggest the video for M Machine’s “Glow”: A teenage girl leads a lonely life (she is abused by parents, abused by peers). A glass flower, once given to her as a gift, comforts her. But even that is eventually stolen by her peers and shattered to pieces. Until a kindly robot befriends her and proceeds to beautifully destroy all of her enemies, creating large (freeze-framed) explosions of blood in his wake. Just to prove that the robot is not a complete, well, robot, he walks alongside her in a sunny valley and tucks her smiling self into bed. It is difficult to imagine such a easy getaway for the viewer, but perhaps that’s why this video is so compelling.
Santigold - Big Mouth (Video)
Santigold makes a howling lead-in to her forthcoming sophomore album, Master of My Make Believe, with her first single, ‘Big Mouth’(produced by Switch and Buraka Som Sistema). Santigold is the established act in this track, taking shots at those who’ve followed in her path, and carving herself a new trail. The video is a cerebral mix of 90’s graffiti aesthetics, childhood afternoon doodles, fish tank dance numbers, and a very possible Lady Gaga mermaid being devoured. Eating up rust, spittin’ out star dust. Who’s looking forward to Santi’s Coachella appearance?
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die (Clams Casino Remix)
This meeting was inevitable, and here it is: Clams Casino and Lana Del Ray. These two have been making far too many publicity waves in the indie circuit not to cross paths, and Clams’ remix of Del Rey’s ‘Born to Die’ is the remarkably strange result. Sonically, this pairing makes little sense: Clams Casino has made his name producing for some of hip-hop’s youngest, most explosive and charismatic acts, like Lil’ B and A$AP Rocky. Lana Del Rey has made her name on a throwback, California 50’s aesthetic. What would a pairing of these two soundlike? It sounds like Clams’ aesthetic has prevailed over Rey. Clams Casino, to produce, often used to type something like ‘blue’ into Limewire, and sample the first thing that came up. Mood over everything, and ‘Born to Die’ is a loaded phrase that Clams has treated with a jarring production most similar to A$AP Rocky’s “Bass”. It is a jolt of energy to Rey’s mature voice.

Moon Boots - Aretha (Zimmer Remix)
Zimmer shares a meaty preview for his upcoming remix of Moon Boots' Aretha. Zimmer labels the re-work as “Tropical Disco” with an island vibe and some sweet steel drums. As usual we look forward to more from Zimmer, and it won’t be long. The Aretha remix EP is due out January 31st on Nervous Records. Each time I go to bed I/play my Aretha Franklin
Simian Ghost - Wolf Girl (Video)
The video for Simian Ghost’s ‘Wolf Girl’ tells a story of primal courtship far closer to the strangeness of Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast” than Disney’s. The set is an archaic, golden hued hotel where one can fight their lover with 19th century pillows and warm candlelight is their only guide. But, the video maintains a crucial, cold distance: The Wolf Girl and her lover eventually take a walk outside and gaze at the moon. He is gazing, she is glaring. He is near erased from the frame while she glares at an alternate life not gone but merely momentarily interrupted. There is a ghostly presence achieved in both song and video; a presence that suggest that real vs. mythic is not an opposition but an adjoined experience.
David Bowie - Let's Dance (SIMØNE RMX)
SIMØNE transforms David Bowie’s ‘Lets Dance’ from cabaret classic to dance-hall disco. Bowie’s original theatrics are pared down and SIMØNE instead opting for darker synths / compact vocals. It is a major change from the original, and, considering the history of ‘Let’s Dance’, change is a neutral value. After the success of ‘Lets Dance’, Bowie stated that he felt he had alienated his old audience, and he didn’t recognize his new one: "I remember looking out over these waves of people [who were coming to hear this record played live] and thinking, 'I wonder how many Velvet Underground albums these people have in their record collections?' It is likely that most listeners of SIMØNE’s ‘Let’s Dance’ remix are amiably familiar with the original, and will greet this bold addition with open ears and minds.

Oliver - Dirty Talk EP + Audio Speedwagon Mixtape
Oliver releases a prime cut new EP, ‘Dirty Talk’(Kitsune). The EP is a throwback to electric disco-rave; the days when people whispered, well, dirty talk in the back of Studio 54 . With hypnotic, alternating vocals between a man and woman (the roles of pursuer and pursued often shifting) layered over the melody, ‘Dirty Talk’ slowly becomes less of a whisper and more of (the very welcome) ear bug.
To mark the release of their new single, Oliver has lovingly put together this mega-mix ‘Audio Speedwagon’ (a clever turn on ‘REO Speedwagon’). This 36-track mix features obscure italo/funk/disco records. In their description, Oliver states that the mix is ‘not for the faint of heart’. We don’t believe he means you need to be a cliff diver; you just need to have some space to dance to unadulterated, good music. Try outs for the human race indeed.

Keep Shelly in Athens - Running Out of You (Video)
Thanasis Tsimpinis posts his highly imaginative short, M I N E, for Keep Shelly in Athens’ ‘Running Out of You’. Woozy and disaffected vocals hang like flowers in the air, and, yes, as I write this this afternoon, I acknowledge that I stole that image straight out of the wondrous visuals that accompany the track. It is anyone’s afternoon dream: Floating flowers, spilt milk, and a (possible) murder at a picnic.
YACHT - I Walked Alone (Get A Room! Remix)
‘All the animals have souls that guide their bones’, this Get a Room! remix of YACHT’s ‘I Walk Alone’ intones, breaking into a bass soon after. The remix heightens the globe-trotting-and-finally home union of the people in the original: I walked alone/Until we met/Then we, we, we, we walked against/The earth/Until we met/Oh you, you, you, I walked alone. This re-work, enlivened by a deft mix of electronica, backing chorus, and occasional 80’s cascading hair-metal guitar (what is that at 3:38?), is the soundtrack to your long but hopeful walk. Free download off the player.
Jay Lamar & Jesse Oliver - Diamonda
These are the first original tracks from the team of Jay Lamar and Jesse Oliver, a production/DJ duo coming from Helsinki (and hailed by the likes of Treasure Fingers, Philosophy of Sound, and ATTAR!, to name but a few). Oliver and Lamar met at music production school, and soon took up a kinship based on their mutual love for ‘all things House, Disco, and Electro’. The duo offers up original mixes of ‘Diamonda’ and ‘Opal’ , along with three remixes of ‘Diamonda’(remixed by Xinobi, Justin Faust, and Bright Shades, respectively). This is DiscoTexas’ first release of 2012, and they’ve started out right.

Caged Animals - All the Beautiful Things In The World (Video)
Here at Scotch and Murder Music we are huge fans of Jamie Harley's music videos. The latest is played to the tune of the Caged Animals' All the Beautiful Things in The World. The video is that special blend of lo-fi, NSFW, psychedelic, greatness we love so much. Oh yeh, the Caged Animals are pretty kick ass as well. All the beautiful things in the world that I want are coming to me.

At the Drive In Reunited!
We would like to redirect your attention for a moment to the reunion of Texas post-hardcore band At the Drive In. This is extraordinary news as there was no indication of these guys getting back together whatsoever, and now they are playing COACHELLA!? If you were huge fans of the underground revolutionary rockers as we were, then you must have pure exhilaration and anticipation pumping through your veins. Not only is the Coachella lineup epic, and probably the best festival lineup you have seen in a while, Goldenvoice promoters have managed to book the most energetic and intriguing rock group of the late 90's. Can't f'ing wait! By the way if you don't own Relationship of Command by ATDI, buy it. Enough said.

Grimes - Genesis
Singer/songwriters Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, will be popping up on your ipod shuffle in the near future, if she already hasn't. The following track Genesis is a preview of what is to come on her soon to be released album Visions. With a Chinese like instrumental melody, airy vocals, and overall poppy sound, Genesis communicates good vibe music. Grimes is sure to make an impact.

Nightriders - Lost the Feeling
OK. Time to get back in your white convertible Corvette and blast the 80's tunes you love. Maybe fly it off a cliff for more 80's dramatic effect. Boston based Nightriders are relatively new to the scene but be sure to keep any eye on the duo. Doesn't this seem like the perfect song to play over an intense training montage? Let's Go!

Krychek - Kronicles of Krychek Part Duex
Krychek returns with The Kronicles of Krychek Part Duex. The Russian offers up an awesome smorgasbord of nu disco and electro blended to perfection. Krychek then transitions us into some super hard beats expectantly featuring SMM favorites Justin Faust, Oliver, M83, and Edwin Van Cleef. Youth Lagoon - July (Video)
Youth Lagoon drops his latest video for July, the third off his wildly successful debut album The Year of Hibernation. The video keeps with the themes of the past with that vivid pre-modern Americana vibe. However, July's video definitely carries darker tones than Youth Lagoon's previous shoots. Director and Cinematographer Tyler T Williams does a particularly stellar job of using July in conjunction with his visuals to arouse tension and suspense in the viewer. Smashing.

Active Child - High Priestess (CFCF Remix)
CFCF remixing Active Child. Need we say more? Probably not, but lets dig deep here. The Montreal based CFCF adds a nice little touch of bass to the track with a splash of pan flute. Thats right your listening to the pan flute. The two up-and-comers were kind enough to give away the track for free. You can download Active Child - High Priestess (CFCF Remix) by clicking on the link below or here.
