The video for Simian Ghost’s ‘Wolf Girl’ tells a story of primal courtship far closer to the strangeness of Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast” than Disney’s. The set is an archaic, golden hued hotel where one can fight their lover with 19th century pillows and warm candlelight is their only guide. But, the video maintains a crucial, cold distance: The Wolf Girl and her lover eventually take a walk outside and gaze at the moon. He is gazing, she is glaring. He is near erased from the frame while she glares at an alternate life not gone but merely momentarily interrupted. There is a ghostly presence achieved in both song and video; a presence that suggest that real vs. mythic is not an opposition but an adjoined experience.
SIMØNEtransforms David Bowie’s ‘Lets Dance’ from cabaret classic to dance-hall disco. Bowie’s original theatrics are pared down and SIMØNEinstead opting for darker synths / compact vocals. It is a major change from the original, and, considering the history of ‘Let’s Dance’, change is a neutral value. After the success of ‘Lets Dance’, Bowie stated that he felt he had alienated his old audience, and he didn’t recognize his new one: "I remember looking out over these waves of people [who were coming to hear this record played live] and thinking, 'I wonder how many Velvet Underground albums these people have in their record collections?' It is likely that most listeners of SIMØNE’s ‘Let’s Dance’ remix are amiably familiar with the original, and will greet this bold addition with open ears and minds.
Oliver releases a prime cut new EP, ‘Dirty Talk’(Kitsune). The EP is a throwback to electric disco-rave; the days when people whispered, well, dirty talk in the back of Studio 54 . With hypnotic, alternating vocals between a man and woman (the roles of pursuer and pursued often shifting) layered over the melody, ‘Dirty Talk’ slowly becomes less of a whisper and more of (the very welcome) ear bug.
To mark the release of their new single, Oliver has lovingly put together this mega-mix ‘Audio Speedwagon’ (a clever turn on ‘REO Speedwagon’). This 36-track mix features obscure italo/funk/disco records. In their description, Oliver states that the mix is ‘not for the faint of heart’. We don’t believe he means you need to be a cliff diver; you just need to have some space to dance to unadulterated, good music. Try outs for the human race indeed.

Thanasis Tsimpinis posts his highly imaginative short, M I N E, for Keep Shelly in Athens’ ‘Running Out of You’. Woozy and disaffected vocals hang like flowers in the air, and, yes, as I write this this afternoon, I acknowledge that I stole that image straight out of the wondrous visuals that accompany the track. It is anyone’s afternoon dream: Floating flowers, spilt milk, and a (possible) murder at a picnic.
‘All the animals have souls that guide their bones’, this Get a Room! remix of YACHT’s ‘I Walk Alone’ intones, breaking into a bass soon after. The remix heightens the globe-trotting-and-finally home union of the people in the original: I walked alone/Until we met/Then we, we, we, we walked against/The earth/Until we met/Oh you, you, you, I walked alone. This re-work, enlivened by a deft mix of electronica, backing chorus, and occasional 80’s cascading hair-metal guitar (what is that at 3:38?), is the soundtrack to your long but hopeful walk. These are the first original tracks from the team of Jay Lamar and Jesse Oliver, a production/DJ duo coming from Helsinki (and hailed by the likes of Treasure Fingers, Philosophy of Sound, and ATTAR!, to name but a few). Oliver and Lamar met at music production school, and soon took up a kinship based on their mutual love for ‘all things House, Disco, and Electro’. The duo offers up original mixes of ‘Diamonda’ and ‘Opal’ , along with three remixes of ‘Diamonda’(remixed by Xinobi, JustinFaust, and Bright Shades, respectively). This is DiscoTexas’ first release of 2012, and they’ve started out right.

We would like to redirect your attention for a moment to the reunion of Texas post-hardcore band At the Drive In. This is extraordinary news as there was no indication of these guys getting back together whatsoever, and now they are playing COACHELLA!? If you were huge fans of the underground revolutionary rockers as we were, then you must have pure exhilaration and anticipation pumping through your veins. Not only is the Coachella lineup epic, and probably the best festival lineup you have seen in a while, Goldenvoice promoters have managed to book the most energetic and intriguing rock group of the late 90's. Can't f'ing wait! By the way if you don't own Relationship of Command by ATDI, buy it. Enough said.

Krychek returns with The Kronicles of Krychek Part Duex. The Russian offers up an awesome smorgasbord of nu disco and electro blended to perfection. We are especially in love with the villainous introduction by The Joker, leading into a smooth house disco groove with the Cosmonauts. Krychekthen transitions us into some super hard beats expectantly featuring SMM favorites Justin Faust, Oliver, M83, and Edwin Van Cleef. Youth Lagoon drops his latest video for July, the third off his wildly successful debut album The Year of Hibernation. The video keeps with the themes of the past with that vivid pre-modern Americana vibe. However, July's video definitely carries darker tones than Youth Lagoon's previous shoots. Director and Cinematographer Tyler T Williams does a particularly stellar job of using July in conjunction with his visuals to arouse tension and suspense in the viewer. Smashing.
CFCF remixing Active Child. Need we say more? Probably not, but lets dig deep here. The Montreal based CFCF adds a nice little touch of bass to the track with a splash of pan flute. Thats right your listening to the pan flute. The two up-and-comers were kind enough to give away the track for free. It looks like Das Rascistcan keep a promise. About a hot minuet ago the New York rappers promised us solo mixtapes from each of its three members, Heems, Dapwell, and Kool A.D. and before you could say Happy New Year the latter of the trio drops his mixtape. Thats right Kool A.D. kicks off our 2012 with The Palm Wine Drinkard. A truly dope mixtape from beginning to end. About a minuet ago Appaloosa dropped their debut EP Patchwork. In that hot minuet ATTAR!'s(former Mustang, Renaud Deru's new solo project) dub remix of the track quickly climbed the beatport charts. We all remember Kris Menace releasing his explosive collaboration single Discopolis with Lifelike on Alen Braxe's label Vulture Music. Just recently the man completed a new collab with friends Lawrence Tompson and Radical Peterson, naming the project Stars on 33. The five track EP was released on December 19th and is an extension of Menace's library of smooth house grooves.
Australian based duo Voltaire Twins' awesome composition called Romulus is appropriately remixed by the stellar Moullinex. More and more of these hard bass driving recreations are being released on a daily basis and the following track is a perfect example of just how good they can be. Dance to it, walk to it, ride the subway to it, do whatever with it. Just do it to this. We're definitely rocking out to this track on the streets of NYC.
Walter Sobecksqueezes in one last mixtape before the years end, Christmas D´Amour. Theres a couple of things to love about this one. First, we must point the fantastically devilish album artwork featuring a religiously symbol-ed out Mr. T. We're pretty sure there is even a little Hanukkah love in that gold mess of his. Then there is the endles track list, which houses so many Scotch and Murder favorites we dont even know where to begin. A perfect blend of Glam, House, and Disco. Gemini gets in there with an epic re-work of Lana Del Rey's Born To Die. The 21-year old Brit adds heaps of electro to the track, while keeping with its dark undertones. The remix features some booming synths with some subtlety blissful keys. Oh yeh, then theres Ms. Lana Del Rey's perfect vocals. Cause you and I, we were born to die.
The Magicianends 2011 by sending you magic kisses with Magic Tape Eighteen. From what we've heard so far it sounds like the magic man has thrown in some Perseus, Oliver, and a little bit of Jacques Renault on his latest mixtape. The most recent addition to the Scotch and Murder residency of DJs, KRYCHEK, gets back to us with his latest mixtape adventure into the realm of disco. The stellar mix is fittingly titled, The Kronicles of Krychek, as we start off with the soft disco bumps of Strange Talk's jubilant Climbing Walls only to eventually be lead into the dark heart of David Lynch's Good Day Today (off Crazy Clown Time). The mix features a number of Scotch and Murder favorites along the way including Oliver, Shindu, Jensen Sportag, Fabian, Justin Faust, and The Wombats. All in all KRYCHEK captures a fine blend of Nu-Disco and Doom Disco, with a little bit of everything in between. Might we add that you should be bumping this at your holiday disco dance parties.
