Skai Nine jumps back on the scene with two new singles, Indigo and Pulse. The DC native keeps with the up-beat ambient synths, but shows some progress on the track. Mr. Nine also passes along word of a full length album due out early next year. You can download both tracks off their respective players or head over to Skai Nine's bandcamp page (all for free).
Selebrities turn up post-rock on Total Slacker's Secret VHS Collection. The Brooklyn based band seems to have firmly entrenched their placed in the post-rock / new wave genre. Pretty great to see a band keying on a sound that we love so much.
Nice little remix of Monarchy's recently re-invented You Don't Want To Dance With Me by Moonlight Matters. The remix is part of the latest Monarchy track to get its own EP, due out October 31st. Moonlight adds a heavy 80s feel to the track with some very nice piano riffs. Be sure to give it a listen and grab the free download in the player. Hold all the crazy inside.
ALVARO hooks it up with a free remix of the Crystal FightersPlage. The tracks starts off quite mellow with a nice little drum beat, soft vocals, and some minuter guitar. Lets not be fooled though, ALVARO kicks it up adding some dirty dub to the track and grinding synth to the track.
Local Bermuda Bonnie drops in with their next new single Say Something off their Drama album. Bonnie keeps with the dark vocals and rich sounds that we've grown used to. Always a good combination in our book. Drama is set for release this October via Chill Mega Chill. Download Say Something in the player. Don't you want to try.
Are you kidding me with this remix Justice? This seriously came out of left field. Here we have the French duo contributing their classic clean bass sound over the super poppy and funky The Golden Age by the The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. The track must be dominating the French House club scene/air waves currently and we guarantee will hit the U.S. very soon. Definitely one of the better remixes coming out lately. What a surprise.
We already heard (and loved) RAC's re-work of Alex Winston's Velvet Elvis, now the Crystal Fighters get their hands on those delicate piercing vocals. They do no disappoint.
The New Division's highly anticipated debut album, Shadows, is finally here. We've been telling you for a minute how much we love the So-Cal new-wave act, so we won't gush our hearts out much more here. What we will do is give you a free remix of Shallow Play by none other than New Division front man John Kunkel's alter ego John Glenn. Go over to bandcampand pick up the full album because it is fantastic. Once you you've got your paws on that, here are the album's killer lyrics. Simply put, simply fantastic.
One of Berlin's electronic perfectionists, Apparat, just released his fourth album The Devil's Walk, a blend of melancholic and grandiose tracks remaining in the sphere of the German's unique sound. You may be familiar with the single Black Water, a fantastic 5:00 minute ballad infused with an eerie atmospheric sound and fitting soft vocals. However, the track that stands out the most to us is Candil de la Calle. Completely reminiscent of the 2007 hit You Don't Me.
Finally our favorite Holy Ghost! track gets its own video. While we're not the biggest fans of photo montages, it works pretty perfectly well for Hold My Breath.
We area a little suprised to find ourselves posting some M.I.A on the old Scotch and Murder Music chart. However, Jesús Vögel's re-work of the track is pretty god damned dope. Check it out.
Champagne Toast is the new single from local favorite Blood Orange, who also happens to be embarking on a US tour with CANT (Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear). We had the pleasure of witnessing Mr. Orange's performance of this song live at the MoMA PS1's Warm Up Sessions and it was probably one of the most intimate we've seen to date. This guy can rock the hell out of a guitar. Just go into his bedroom.
So today we've learned two things about IS TROPICAL:1) they make genius music 2) they make genius music videos. The Kitsune band's second single music video takes a different approach from The Greeks. There we saw little boys bringing their creativity to life with nerf guns and cartoon blood. With Lies the band pairs their deep synth and on point vocals with some glitched out retro vulture shots and modern hot sex romp. They don't love you. True colors shine through.
Just a friendly reminder that the M83's Midnight City Remix EP drops today. We've already told you how much we love both Big Black Deltaand Trentemøller versions of the track. We round our the EP with the two final re-works of the track by Man Without a CountryandTeam Ghost. You can stream the entire EP below. Pick up your copy of M83's Midnight City Remix EPdirectly from M83.
GAMES, the alter ego of Ford & Lopatin, aka Joel Ford and Daniel Lopatin, drop in with a new track New Disguise. The firs track released by the duo since switchingnames takes on more of groove sound than we are used to under the old moniker. They do however keep with the retro feel from past works. More GAMES please.
So we've been listening to the Radiohead TKOLRMX series for a hot minuet now, and we think we've settled on a favorite. SBTRKTadds a little kick, actually make that quite a few kicks, to our latest Radiohead favorite Lotus Flower. SBTRKT sets up the track with about as perfect as an intro as we've heard. We left you two other underplayed high quality tracks from TKOL series as well, remixes by Jamie XX and Caribou. Long live the King of Limbs.
Com Turise drops this short film for one of our favorites off his debut full length Galactic Melt. Brokendate (directed by 10lb Productions)takes on everything 80s detective-noir and sci-fi and delivers it in a finely wrapped five minuet bundle of joy. If you've been following us for a minuet now you have definitely heard of the Brooklyn synth wizard that is Com Truise. If not, then check out a little bio about him here. Also, check out Com Trusie' tour dates. See you at the beach.
We're kind of suckers for classical music, especially when the orchestra is bumping that Basement Jaxx. Apparently so is Sundeep Toor who, after hearing the Metropole Orkest's rendition of Mr. Jaxx's HEY U, was compelled to animate this stellar video fro the rest of us. In his words:
While going through spotify one day 8 weeks ago, I came across the new Basement Jaxx album. I've always been a fan of their dance music, but hearing their tracks being composed by the metropole orkest just blew my mind. While listening to the album, the 'Hey U' track in particular caught my attention and ideas came flooding in of a parade of exotic animals performing the track. I felt compelled to animate something and here is the finished project.
The track itself is part of Basement Jaxx's collaboration with the Netherlands' Metropole Orkest and renowned London conductor, Jules Buckley. The project features a full sixty piece orchestra along with twenty voice choir and sees the Metropole Orkest perform classical and contemporary orchestral versions of the legendary Basement Jaxx catalogue. Pick up a copy of Basement Jaxx vs Metropole Orkest from Juno.
Just in case you missed The New Division's video for True Lies. The CA based band gives you a little dose of some adult level detention. Things get pretty serious in there.
Deadmau5 like Mord Fustang remixes Sexy and I know It by LMFAO. He unleashes a heavier spin on the LA based duos single and makes you want to unleash the fury on the dance floor. The Estonian has been gaining notoriety and momentum in the electronic scene and his shows are supposed to be incredible. Join us at Webster Hall NYC tonight for this monster's dj set.
Brooklyn duo Warm Ghostrelease this much deserved video for G.T.W.S. Off the bands upcoming Narrows EP due out next tuesday (September 27th) on Partisan Records. We also left you the bands earlier release of a live in-studio performance of the track. So evil.
Nothing like a little unofficial music video to start your day. Today the fine folks at nautico bless CANT (aka Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor) with this stellar video for the band's She Found A Way Out. The video takes a candid look into the lives of a lesbian couple. She Found A Way Out, an instant SMM favorite, was surprisingly left off CANT's Dreams Come True album, so we are quite please its getting some video love.
A finely timed mash-up by Reborn Identity, both in sound and sight. To say the pairing of Björk's crisp and clean vocals from Hyperballed with the supreme eeriness that is Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna is a success would be an understatement. This mash rocks you to the core. On top of all that we get some absolutely epic visuals of some serene mountains ranges. Played well Reborn Identity, played well.
Shooting Love will be the next Mustang hit to get its own EP. The release will feature remixes by Black Strobe, Fat Club, and Jeremy Glenn. The Shooting Love EP is set for release on October 17th via Different Recordings. We left you the Jeremy Glenn ReOrder, our personal favorite on the release, for a little taste. This one definitely has that 80s / New Order feel to it. If you want more Mustang, you can stream the entire EP directly from Different Recording.
Dubstep maestro Skream made a promise that if 15,000 people likedDubstep Cures Cancer that he would then release a new free track. Boy did he keep his promise. Demented serves its name properly with some select sordid sounds. Certainly something we haven't heard before.
As forDubstep Cures Cancer, its a non-profit organization that donates all profits to cancer research. Pretty worthwhile stuff, and they've got some pretty sweet gear too. Check them out.
It seems that Justin Faust has taken a liking to fine American cuisine. Fresh off his USA tour Mr. Faust graces us with the aptly named Brisket Biscuit Mixtape. Plenty of love to go around on this one. More Brisket. More Biscuit.

CA based Tashaki Miyaki drop in with a stunning video (and sound) for Somethin' Better Than Nothin'. Its refreshing to see band notorious for their uncanny ability to cover just about anyone to come out with a track with such an original sound. Tashaki Miyaki keeps it simple but executes, and there is nothing wrong with that my friend. Pick up Tashaki Miyaki's Somethin' Better Than Nothin' plus a bonus track off bandcamp for 50¢ (you read that correctly). Tashaki Miyaki'sdebut 12-inch album is due out October 31st on The Sounds of Sweet Nothing, pre-order a copy now.
Following up with our teaser we bring you Owl Vision's new music video for Moloch. The single itself is much more impressive than the actual video. However, director Kommak does do the track justice. High energy, fast pace, and gritty bass packed into 4 minutes of club mayhem. A special thank you to our Swedish friend Johannes Arnesson for continually updating us on his awesome material. He knocks it out of the park with this one. You will be able to buy the track on Beatport, iTunes, or Spotify on September 27.
A new fresh approach to the remix genre is always welcomed here at Scotch and Murder. Perfect Lines (aka Ryan Nelson) does just that in his re-work of James Blake's I Never Learnt To Share. Mr. Lines chops the hell out of Blake's vocals, giving the track a completely new vibe. That is a good thing. Trust us. He also adds about three cups funk and a splash of synth greatness to the track. Dreamy as a dream gets. Dig it.
It is sometimes in our deepest moments of sadness and grief we find our true genius. As much is apparent in Aeroplane's tribute to the late DJ Mehdi, Big Boys Dont Cry. A robust track that that booms with creativity and thought. We only wish it came under better circumstance.
When trying to describe the sound that is Plastic Plates the other day the only person we could liken him to was the one and only, The Magician. So we got pretty amped to see this little remix of the magic man's new single I Don't Know What To Doby one of our latest favorites, Plastic Plates. Personally we cant think of a better pairing. Now if we could only get these two to do a show together.
A little French on French remix to wake you up this morning. Para One adds a little kick in the face to Justice's Auido, Video, Disco. We're guessing this wont be the last remix we get of the new Justice anthem, but its a good place to start. AVD-4-Life.
Accompanying Ryan Gosling's heroic story as a stunt and heist driver through the mean streets of L.A. is an appropriate Risky Business-esque original score by Cliff Martinez, the pre Chad Smith drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is not some dumb ass Fast and Furious car chase action thriller but a character type movie that really keeps you glued to your seat. Cliff's eerie backdrop played over Gosling's serene, distant, and psychotic character interaction along with the 80's pop tunes blasting in scene transition fantastically supports the sequence of events throughout the movie. There are some additional tracks to the OST that you may be familiar with as we were and that fit the genre perfectly. No surprise College's and and Kavinsky's super 80's synth track were included as well. So appropriate.
!PAUS3takes a glitchier approach to in his Broken Cassette remix of PICTUREPLANE's The Art Of Feeling. There is also a solid set of bongos in there too. The remix is the second of a three part remix compilation by !PAUS3. You can check out Part I of the series here. Definitely a new sound to our ears, we can wait to see what !PAUS3 has in store for us in Part III. Special thanks to Projecting Nothing Productions for giving SMM the jump on the track. Free download in the player. Grab it.
Mustang shares a nice little remix of Crystal Fighters' Champion Song. The tracks features a riveting bass line and some finally timed church bells. The remix is part of the upcoming Champion Song single release that will feature additional remixes byMr Nô, AKS, Homework, and Clubfeet. The single is set for release on October 10th 2011 via Different Recordings.
Monarchy re-invents You Don't Want To Dance With Me in the power songs release as a single. The duo decided to take the song a different direction adding in the beautiful vocal of Britt Loveof Mini Viva fame to make it a duet. There is something to be said of a song about love ignored sung as a duet. It certainly adds a some additional thought to the track. Pick up the original version of You Don't Want To Dance With Me off Monarchy's full length Around The Sunfrom iTunes.
Whats better then a newDaft Punk track? An old Daft Punk track that is new. Drive, a previously unreleased demo from the french duo is out today as part of Soma Records 20 Years, a three-disc compilation album. The track definitely reminds of a younger raw Daft Punk, but it still super glorious. It took over 15 years but, stream Daft Punk's Drive in all of its glory below.
Always a pleasure when discovering new Thom Yorke material. Of course it will be a little out there. Of course it will be more on the electronic side. But we can always expect exceptional production from an eclectic musician who never ceases to amaze. He just recently released the Money Back Remix for the Mary Ann Hobbs XFM show which you should listen to now.
Here at Scotch and Murder we have a soft spot for the dark stuff. That dark disco-noir if you will. Hence, when we got the e-mail below from Boulder native Dillon Morton, aka LUST, about his new EP Dark Water we got pretty pumped to listen to his work. He did not disappoint. A dark synth ride through the streets with some perfectly placed stabs to keep you focused. For a full foray into the mind of LUST check out heres the the EP in his own words:
When I began writing the Dark Water EP, I wanted to create a dark
disco-noir sound that came off as an erotic horror movie soundtrack.
Each song, with the help of interludes, moves the EP through several
different settings I had envisioned as scenes, although the story is
not important just yet... Enjoy the coaxingly sensuous mystery that is
Dark Water.
You can download each track individually for free off the player below, or download the Dark Water EP right from LUST himself (also free). Consider yourself sensuously coaxed.
Get wet with ANR (Awesome New Republic) in their video for It's Around You. The track is the fourth off the Stay Kids album to get a video, and deservedly so. So far we've seen ANR go serial killer on us, take on a beauty pageant, and play with some kids. Now the Miami based duo whips out the the slip and side and body paint in the thoroughly wet video for It's Around You.
Changes is the latest hotness from Twin Shadow. Definitely a bit more up-beat and perky than were used to from the band. However, that may have to do with the fact that they are covering 80s Italian band Bagarre's Circus is Gone.
Andre Allen Anjos of RAC (aka The Remix Artist Collective) takes Gigamesh's When You're Dancing in a new direction. That direction of course is the great beyond, outer-space. The RAC mix totally takes on the self-described "space-disco" vibe with what sounds like some heavy alien-esque organs and laser synthetics. Space Disco 4 Life.
Mr. Boulder dropout aka Pretty Lights has officially officially established himself as a master in the electronic realm. His insane new track I Know the Truth has exceeded expectations, yet remaining faithful to his sampling methods and huge bass sound. If you attended Bonnaroo '11 or Governor's Ball you may recognize this excellent tune as he did play it for you. Come join us at Binghamton University to check his live show out. Random, yes, but our paths cross in the glory of upstate New York. Don't miss it!
